This happened for 2-3 consecutive days on breakfast and Adi fills me on it, telling me it’s an advert for some sports awards.
That explains spotting Boris Becker.

I had an amazing week refreshing and bringing forwards our Rio memories.
And as I write off it’s last chapter, I feel as sad as I did when I left it!

Before I say buh-bye, I have a few more suggestions for you in no particular order.

Lapa arches or Carioca Aqueduct.
It’s an old roman water channel from 18th century.
An iconic landmark of the city.

Favelas or the shanty towns of Rio with Christo Redentor overlooking them. No offense.
I was surprised to know that they were a popular tourist attraction but not so much when I recalled, so is Dharavi in Mumbai.
However, they have escalators for tourists here!

#8 Copacabana Beach

I’m pretty sure, football fans do recognise this from watching the FIFA World Cup coverage.

The undulating wave pattern on walkway along the Copacabana beach.

It’s one of the liveliest beaches, even on a bad weather day!

Besides chiselled surfers, the beach is populated by sunbathers, sand artists, braid makers, beach volley players and lots of tourists.

On a sunny weekend, you’ll be very lucky to find a good spot on the beach.

Copacabana is an eyeful of sight. On good weather day it looks gorgeous blue and gorgeous brown (on the opposite side) 😉

Pristine waters at Copacabana beach!

#9 Ipanema beach

Remember the song ‘The girl from Ipanema….’ ?

The beach that made the song and then the song made the beach popular??

Nevermind. I did not know that either.

The Travel Channel has listed it as the ‘sexiest beach in the world’!
Definitely, they were not here on a cloudy day.

The beach has two mountain peaks at the end of it known as ‘two brothers’ making it picturesque especially during sunset.

Feria hippie de Ipanema or Ipanema Flea market that you can only catch on Sundays.

But you must visit this, that is, if you love flea markets! You’ll find lots of Brazillian arts and crafts, laces, jewellery, paper mache stuff, leather products and lot more.

There is whole big section of paintings by local Brazilian artists. Do not miss browsing through this section of market.

Look carefully at the names.
And don’t forget to step into these stores when you see them.

I don’t know exactly if Rio is a fashion conscious city or does style come naturally to all the lovely ladies that I walked past. And so I had to check what was in their stores.  As you can infer from picture above that Chifon and Salinas are store for the ladies and the black bags are for gentlemen to follow.

Brazilian Coffee is what all you coffee lovers must buy and the non coffee lovers can buy for their coffee loving family and friends.

Gilson Martin is one of Rio’s iconic stores that gives you a chance to rub shoulders with celebrity clients like Halle Berry, Madonna.

Well, now you can count Pastlife Seamstress in that list 😀  You can take a peek at my Gilson Martin tote bag here.

Oskelen is a Brazilian brand that makes non sporty kind want to play sports or at least get in some fancy sport gear. They also do brilliant beach wear! You can find the stores at many places in Brazil.

For some serious shopping you can quit the flea market and hit the malls, particularly the one here and here.

And Hawaianas!
Oh, come on now. That’s a given.

Although Hawaianas steals thunder and is now synonymous with summer, there are many other Brazilian brands that make great shoes. Tried and tested.

And trusted.

You can’t be anything but HAPPY in this tropical paradise 🙂

 Tips and some other info

First things first.

Sunblock – check. Sunglasses – Check. Bathing suit – check. Rain Shoes – Check. Voila! You’re ready for Rio.

Wearing anything that goes beyond shoulders or knees is …well, it’s almost unlawful. Especially when both done together.

Wearing your bathing suit 24hrs is totally acceptable. No problemo.

While we heard/read a lot of stories about Rio being unsafe, it did not feel that intimidating, however huge and heavy iron door and armed guards at the buildings spoke of a different story.

Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon are good areas to make your base.

Take taxis whenever possible.

For planning your sightseeing trips check the weather, you don’t want to go all the way up and find the head of  Christ engulfed in clouds. Literally.

Besides these 12 things to do in Rio, you can take a tropical rainforest day trip to Tijuca Forest, watch a samba performance at night at a local club, visit Maracana stadium or simply camp at Ipanema!

Vegetarians be prepared for the challenge of hunting for food, Brazilians love their beef! And food at many restaurants is paid for by kilos!!

With 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio less than 550 days away, it’s good time to plan a trip to Rio!

Hope you enjoyed Rio! Will come back with more, from elsewhere in the world. 🙂
