Brazil: Rio de Janeiro – Selaron Steps.

Share

After you’ve seen two amazing one-of-a-kind sights of Rio de Janeiro, it’s time for another wonder fast acquiring an iconic status – Escadaria Selaron.

#3 Escadaria Selaron or Selaron Steps

What, a staircase? Really??

Yes!! A staircase. And no ordinary one.

All those who follow certain entertainment sites, that frequently come up with some really clever (and some weird & crappy) lists of things like top ten confusing words or top ten buildings or top ten insults or top ten trees of the world (no seriously, there is one. You can look it up!) and top ten blah-blah, you must have come across this.

If not then, you can have a look hereย and here.

On Selaron Steps. Aka Lapa Steps. Brainchild of Chile born self taught painter and ceramist, Jorge Selaron.

As fascinating as the steps are so is the story behind them.
The artist himself, Jorge Selaron.

These steps are between the not so affluent, Santa Teresa and Lapa neighbourhoods, where the artist lived. He began repairing these steps with salvaged tiles from over the city in colours of Brazil’s national flag. As many artists have it in their beginning years, mockery came in abundance his way, for his choice of colours and the idea, in general.

Also, as artists who have more of passion than blood in their veins, Selaron carried on his work unfazed by attacks both verbal and physical, calling it a ‘tribute to Brazilians’.

As the perceived mad artist carried on convinced in his madness, he began receiving tiles from visitors all over the world!!

Today, it has some 2000 plus tiles and of them more than 300 are hand painted by the artist himself.

Selaron Steps were considered a ‘continuous work of art’, until the demise of artist, just a month before our visit. ๐Ÿ™

It is really exhaustive amount of work here and an amazing form of street art! And now a major landmark of Rio. So much for mocking an artist!!

See something familiar??
I had never imagined to see the middle one (the blue face with red tongue) in Brazil.
I mean, you don’t even see that in India anymore!!

Selaron Steps claim to fame ranges from commercials, National Geographic travel shows to
music videos (Snoop Dogg’s Beautiful, U2) to Rio’s 2016 Olympic bid video.

Whatever the residents made of this, Jorge Selaron was building a staircase to success and fame for himself!

How to get to Selaron Steps?

Knowing that Selaron Steps is not in the safest of Rio neighbourhoods we hired a taxi from the hotel to get here. Well, the man, Jorge Selaron was found dead on these very steps exactly a month ago so…

I do recommend taking a taxi/guided tour.

You could spend around 30min here.

I would highly recommend it, especially if you love street art! Or any art form.

This visit can be combined with a visit to Lapa Arches, Metropolitan Cathedral & Sambodrome.

All of these feature in the up coming post. See you then!
