#2 Sugar Loaf Mountain

Sugar Loaf Mountain or Pao de Acucar as it is called in Portuguese, was a place, I had no idea about before being to Rio. But it is one of the major landmarks in Rio and much like Christ, visible from a lot of places in the city and once I came to know, it  began appearing everywhere, on bags, on t-shirts, on umbrellas, on logos. Just everywhere!

The Sugar Loaf Mountain at the mouth of Guanabara Bay.
It’s called so because it is shaped like a loaf of sugar.

It stands unmissably tall towering over the rest of the mountains. Although overshadowed by Christo Redentor in popularity but no less of a wonder!

Sugar loaf mountain stood in tough competition with Christo Redentor.
Even when it came to reaching it!

Having spent a good part of the day at Christo Redentor another hour in a queue was the last thing one needs but once you get to the top,
the views smoothen out all the creases on your brow!

But not without some matchless city views.
And in all that awe we did not even take one picture of us and took this quick shot. Hope you didn’t miss the lightning strike right up Adi’s shoulder!!

Christo Redentor!
Jot it down or punch it down on your list now.

HOW TO REACH SUGAR LOAF MOUNTAIN?

First of all, set aside an evening for this. A clear one if you can.

We took a taxi from Copacabana to Avenida Pasteur in Praia Vermelha in Red Beach District. Local bus can be taken as well and it drops you right outside the ticket area/boarding area.

The glass walled cable car takes you to the top of sugar loaf mountain in two stages.

After first leg, you reach Urca Mountain where you can alight the car and take in the gorgeous view of Christ statue and Guanabara bay. There are some souvenir shops here.

The next leg will take you atop sugar loaf mountain, which gives bird’s eye view of the city and treats you with splendid views.

Interval between the cars is 20 minutes and is about the right time you need at Urca Mountain.

On sugar loaf mountains there are a couple of cafes and eateries where you can enjoy a drink or a small meal in breathtaking views.

Unlike Christo Redentor platform, the area here is quite huge and accommodate enough people without being crowded or blocked views.

The area is surrounded by tropical rainforest with many exotic bird species.

You can keep aside about 3hrs for the round trip.

Lastly, don’t forget to drop in the big Havaianas store at the boarding base of Sugar Loaf Mountain!

See you soon, with more on Rio 🙂
