Santorini – The Greek Fantasy! (Day Two)

Share

Isn’t it just lovely to wake up to something like this? A clear blue sky and a clear blue sea, an absolute blessing for the ‘sun-starved’ (…and err…probably a nightmare for a photophobic friend of mine!)

Perfect day!

And wouldn’t it be lovely to walk down these steps ?

Santorini, greece, oia, travel, photography, things to do in santorini, things to do in oia, indian traveler in santorini, sunsets in santorini, Canaves oia

Even if it is once, it is worth it!

And to pass through doors like this?

Santorini, greece, oia, travel, photography, things to do in santorini, things to do in oia, indian traveler in santorini, sunsets in santorini, Canaves oia

What do you think is beyond these doors?

Beyond these doors is the Aegean Sea, they say Poseidon lives here and runs his trident over these waters to make them smooth and calm or otherwise. And why shouldn’t the Greek God have the best sea(t)? I’m totally convinced with this explanation and feel no longer perplexed as to how and why is this sea so unrealistically beautiful and so untroubled.

So it is day two and I’m ready in my Hervé Léger bandage dress, that I’ve been saving for ages (which in my sense of time is anything beyond 18 months). When I first saw this dress and tried it on, it did remind me of Santorini and I’ve been calling it my ‘Santorini’ dress ever since. Even so, I had never thought I would be wearing it ‘in Santorini’ one day!!

Thankfully the day came soon enough, while I could still get into it without a black out!

Santorini….I’m one of your own!

The plan for the day was to keep going without a destination in mind and to stop anywhere it fancied us and go on exploring little more of the most picturesque village in the world. Also grab some lunch and claim a spot on Oia castle for another spectacular sunset.

We started at the foot of Oia.

This island and the others in the archipelago were formed as a result of a very very big volcanic eruption that took place around 17th century dividing one big island into these tiny siblings. This history of its origin makes its landscape very fascinating and photogenic. This is also the reason the outer beaches have red/black sand and their waters being warmer. The island is roughly the shape of a huge crescent moon. The inner edges of island slope towards the sea and the loosened earth keeps collapsing into the sea! Yeah, that sounds scary to me too!

The slopes are steep and cliffs are sharp and jagged, the sun is searing and the winds are stormy. Despite these extreme features it does feel like a pretty cozy and dreamy place.

:)

Incase you’re thinking why aren’t there other tourists seen if it’s such a gem of a place then that’s because it gets very sunny and hot and dry during the day which compels people to go indoors after a while. But incase you are out its better to keep a hat with you. But contrary to sun’s dictum the wind didn’t let me keep my hat on. I was constantly at war with those gusty winds. Sometimes it would win, sometimes I.

Here, I’m kind of in the middle of one of those battles.

It definitely takes more than just sun and glare to keep people from exchanging vows.

There are many such white washed, white domed churches in the village.

Santorini, greece, oia, travel, photography, things to do in santorini, things to do in oia, indian traveler in santorini, sunsets in santorini, Canaves oia

And the typical blue domed ones

:)

This was another of my favourite sight in Santorini!

He was such a sweetie, taking respite in coolness of lime and such little shade and still at peace!
And he also knows the dress code.

To my surprise Oia was a very small village. Small enough to walk around it twice in a day. Its resident population is in three figures and has too many churches for that number. Here is another one or rather a part of another one. While my husband was trying to photograph this church this little Greek fellow enters the frame unabashedly, with a stick in hand and singing to himself!

He definitely added one thing to the picture – uniqueness!

The gates and doors in Santorini know how to draw the line without being daunting!

A potential business opportunity lies behind me. Anyone?  :)

Okay I have a seat and now all I need is a plate of food and a drink!

We found a decent place for lunch with ample vegetarian food options. It was a great place with great view, as is everywhere in Oia.

That’s my cup of tea, to cope with the heat!

There is a very interesting activity to try out here – a photoshoot cruise! You ride the waves on one of these catamarans and go to one of the many small uninhabited islands for a sunset photoshoot with a professional photograher! We did not go for this one but it does sound like a fun activity.

The cats in the sea!

I was very tempted for a snooze post all the feta cheese that we had during lunch!

Yeah, that’s exactly what I wanted then – a catnap!

But there was this store on the way back, that I dare you to cross, without so much as a nanosecond pause. It is a bookstore called Atlantis. It rubs its shoulders with the likes of Shakespeare & Co. in both popularity and quaintness. I really recommend it to book lovers – if not for a book but a feel. A flight of steep steps takes you right down into a place that smells of wood, old books and oozes madness and genius. The books are daringly stacked here in less than usual order. They look pre-owned and I love the fact that they call them pre-loved! It is definitely worth crossing an ocean for, as I had read about it.

Worth missing out on a few Zzzz’s :D

What more I liked about this place was the fact that the people are nice and you are allowed to take pictures unlike some big haughty stores! And it’s not just books they have in stock, you can even rent a cat! Well, look…

Must’ve read something really boring!

Here! Take it away from me. I can write a better book for myself!

Well, well! Look who’s here!

We did buy a couple of books from there and went back for some shade and sleep. By evening we were bathed, changed and ready for sun’s show.

The Greek sun slants the shadow

However, we did come back sooner than the previous day but did not go to Oia castle as planned. Because… err…

Well….this could beat a concert crowd!

People were everywhere they could be without breaking a rule or a leg!

But we found a satisfactory place!

And while we waited the wait…

Taking the world, one village at a time ;)

I bought this the same morning in a jewellery store in Santorini. I loved the pendant and got it customised by the lovely store owner.

Santorini is not just about blue domed churches and white washed villages, there is another thing that is as iconic to Santorini – the donkey! They are found in many souvenir shops (of course not the real ones!!) along with donkey milk products like soaps/lotions etc. It is believed to be really good for skin. And no, they don’t smell of donkeys at all. The donkey is to Santorini, what a camel is to Rajasthan, India. I hope you get the idea now.

I had been on a lookout for them ever since entering Santorini

This was such a cute and scared donkey strutting way too quick for a clear shot

Standing next to us there was a  Greek couple on their honeymoon, they took this picture of us.

Santorini, greece, oia, travel, photography, things to do in santorini, things to do in oia, indian traveler in santorini, sunsets in santorini, Canaves oia

I love how the sun’s rays fall on us, without totally taking the focus off us.

Santorini, greece, oia, travel, photography, things to do in santorini, things to do in oia, indian traveler in santorini, sunsets in santorini, Canaves oia

And we took this one ourselves!

So the story goes like this – the Greek couple is later on asked to take a picture of another older French-Canadian couple standing next to them. A conversation is initiated as the Greek wife speaks french. The conversation also falls on a pair of ears accustomed to hearing a lot of french. The older French-Canadian couple, it turns out, is celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary there, while the Greeks , as I said, are on their honeymoon. They further exchange some words regarding their jobs and one can see a seed of friendship being sown in the Greek soil. Afterwards they make a pact to meet at the same spot to celebrate silver jubilee of Greek wedding and a golden jubilee of the French one!! That’s wishful thinking but I really do hope that happens. It was a conversation out of a movie but it was happening for real, right when this splendid sun was setting. Best things in life REALLY are free!

Just when we were, oblivious to the neighbouring couples, being a part of the dialogues they shared, a helicopter came and hovered over the sea. For a few minutes it had become the cynosure of evening and shutterbugs went nuts.

Was it 007? :D

Is that you James?

A different place but the same sun?

Everytime I see a sunset I remember this Urdu verse by Naushad

Main suraj hoon zindagi ki ramak chhod jaunga, main doob bhi gaya to shafaq chhod jaunga” I’ve translated it in the caption of the following picture.

Santorini, greece, oia, travel, photography, things to do in santorini, things to do in oia, indian traveler in santorini, sunsets in santorini, Canaves oia

”The sun I am, the seeds of life I shall sow,
Even as I set, will leave behind an after glow”

A phenomenon that happens everyday feels like a ceremony here. The curtain is down. But the show must go on. Enter : Moon. It does not let the darkness take over the stage, but reflects beautifully on the calm sea and the villages perched like eagles’ nests on the volcanic island. It’s reflection draws a wavy path on the viscous sea that made me feel like walking across over it!

The villages glowing in the moonlight

We had a candle light, moonlit dinner on the way back, the view above is from the same place.

Late night jewellery shopping! God! My eyes are like saucers!!! I don’t remember what I was specifically looking at. :D

Santorini, greece, oia, travel, photography, things to do in santorini, things to do in oia, indian traveler in santorini, sunsets in santorini, Canaves oia

It was such a beautiful day, etched deep in my memory.

Santorini, greece, oia, travel, photography, things to do in santorini, things to do in oia, indian traveler in santorini, sunsets in santorini, Canaves oia

And the place glows bright through the night like this, till the light dawns again!

Take care readers till we meet again on DAY THREE!
