Welcome to Hollywood!

Namaste, Bonjour and Hello there!

Some pictures from our big trip to the ‘Americas’.

While bad weather (among other disappointments) awaited us all over the place. We still got to steal some perfectly sunny moments in L.A.

Does it look like LA?? Grey and deserted. I mean, seriously?

Breaking away from wind, rain and easter-break madding crowd of New York City, we landed in a very sunny LA, but by the time we got to our hotel the grey clouds and chilly winds accosted us. My thoughts went to my suitcase full of summer clothes not exceeding 70cms in length. I wanted to roll down the cab window and let out a prolonged urrrrrrrrgh!! Anyways I thought, there’s this hotel to look forward to. The Roosevelt Hotel.

LA, Hollywood, travels, traveler, travel blog, USA, hollywood trip, photography, travel pictures, hollywood review, LA review, Roosevelt hotel, beverly hills

Its right on the walk of fame!

We stayed at Roosevelt Hotelย ย which looked very promising when I first saw it, on the computer screen, on our kitchen table. More so with their fabulous website and interesting history. First Oscar award ceremony was held here in 1929, also Marilyn Monroe stayed here for two long years. This is the place where she made her debut, as a model, in a photoshoot on Roosevelt’s diving board. Also it is right on the famous Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Well, there were all the reasons to say yes to it!!

The hotel people were pretty quick and deft in handling our luggage and escorting us to our room from the busy reception area. The room was average and I’m being generous here. One can pretty much guess the age of the hotel by taking a look at the bathroom. And these were the thoughts before turning on the shower. Well, imagine a rain of blunt arrows on your back. Thats how it worked. The room had grey walls. Seriously. The lobby looks dark and has some vintage charm to it but the corridors leading to the rooms had a bad stench. After the unpleasant plane ride to NYC, the impossible weather and New York’s so called ‘lively’ crowd, their hotel industry just did, what you call a closure for me, on my take on USA. I just talked about how good India is, for days after that.

Moral of the story – Don’t judge the book by its cover.

But good thing about LA is that you stay out most of the time. ย ๐Ÿ™‚

What saves the grace, for the hotel is its location. Its right on the walk of fame. Its across the road from the Chinese Theater, Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum and Dolby Theater wherein takes place the Academy Award ceremony. Its a five minutes walk from a mall from where you can see the hollywood sign and has lots of cafes and restaurants around it.

The Chinese Theatre – hosted Oscar award ceremony in the past and now movie premiers glorify it.

The next morning was dry hence better, but a bit cold. We found a breakfast place (supposedly famous, having made an appearance in a never heard of soap). Well, everything in the US of A is either one or more of these superlatives – greatest/biggest/tallest/first/largest or just ‘famous’ or so I gathered. Also when they say ‘world’ they mean ‘America’.

This is Shelley’s Cafe. It looks and feels like some college canteen. I really liked the breakfast (sans coffee) there. Simple, working, economic and a stone’s throw away from our hotel.

Following the first things first rule, we took a tour to Beverly Hills. Sun was out, there was this open jeep and they would drive you around Beverly Hills. Sounded great and was too.

The Greystone mansion (inside the park) appears in many movies including What Women Want, The Big Lebowski, all Spiderman series and lot more. There was a wedding being hosted there that day so couldn’t take a look inside.

At MJ’s doorstep

If the weather is good, you will definitely enjoy a ride along these beautiful green boulevards with same kinds of trees on either side. All the drive ways in Beverly Hills are so planned that you see the same variety of tree on either side, and differing from each drive way. If you are lucky, there is a good chance to see a celebrity.

There are several places from where one can see the HOLLYWOOD sign. One being the Mulholland drive which was a part of movie star home tour that we took. It has the advantage of panoramic city views, additionally. Which is more worth watching at night, if you ask me.

We returned back to our hotel via Rodeo Drive. Mecca of higher than the higher end shopping. Even Oscar de la Renta shops here. You get the idea.

We had landed in the coldest spring that LA had seen in six years. This day looked so good so far, so we decided to make hay while the sun literally shines and wrap up the rest of the day at Santa Monica beach. It turned out to be one of our best days in this big trip. Here is the evidence.

LA, Hollywood, travels, traveler, travel blog, USA, hollywood trip, photography, travel pictures, hollywood review, LA review, Roosevelt hotel, beverly hills, chinese theatre

This was the first sight. The beautiful Pacific Ocean.

Santa Monica is a gorgeous and relatively quieter part of LA, a tad away from the madness of Hollywood. That day everything was just perfect, the sky, the sea, the golden beach. The trip was finally looking up. ‘Sigh’

I really loved this clean, long stretch of golden beach. Also at fifteen degree celsius, the sea looks better from a distance and this walk has amazing views of the beach, enough benches if you would like to take a seat.

The main artery of America ends here.

With sunset, we set foot on 3rd street promenade. A pedestrian friendly, very lively shopping street with alfresco dining, local artists, music – all the entertainment to call it a day.

Santa Monica is also a good place for food, for the number of restaurant it has. Lots of Indian/Chinese/Thai restaurants. We had a great dinner at an Indian restaurant ย that evening before we went back and crashed in the bed.

We spent the next day at Universal Studios. I totally enjoyed it. If I ignore the incessant drizzle. Sharing two pictures from there. This place is better experienced for real then virtually seen.
