Create some waves…

Hi Beautiful People,

Welcome to my crafty corner. Hope you and all that surrounds, is well. Did you see what I did with a piece of yellow lace on a dress in my last post? If yes then, lets move on to Part 2 of the same ‘lace’ saga. This time I used it (among other things) to decorate a box, now storing my jewellery. If you have no idea what I’m talking about then do a quick catch up by clickingΒ here.

The story behind the ‘box’ in question goes like this. Before this box looked like this….

…it was housing a fine wine. The wine had delivered itself and the large box sat empty and idle on a shelf. One day I grabbed it and gave it a makeover and put it back to task. The most important task, of safekeeping my jewellery.

Women love their jewellery, I love mine absolutely. I buy a lot of what is called as fashion/imitation/junk jewellery, more than I ever wear, from flea markets, trinket stores from all the places I go to. No outfit is complete and no occasion special without them. Therefore, going a step further in keeping it well, keeping it longer and keeping it organized makes perfect sense in the world to me.

Although I own a fair variety of trinket boxes (I like to keep things compartmentalized), one cannot have one too many boxes! So I’ll take you off from my chatter now and straight to the step by step transition of a plain box to a more regal looking one.

This was the plain wooden box that had a bottle of wine in it.

This is how it looked on the inside…

I began with three Β Acrylic Colours (red, yellow, white), Water (for mixing them) and Paint brushes (flat head ones). You can use a marking pencil to draw a pattern on the box too, I have painted with free hand.

Start at the lower most end of the box, by making a broad scalloped line or a wave like pattern with red paint. You can use the width of the flat brush head as the reference, for the width of wave on the box. Or you can draw these waves, of equal length using a pencil, before filling in the paint. This is a fast drying paint so you need not wait after painting each wave. For darker colours, use two – three coats.

This is how it looked and for once I thought of stopping at that.

Next, I mixed some yellow in red paint to make it a shade lighter and painted another wave on top of the first one. I followed this all the way to the top. For each new wave I added a bit of yellow, making it lighter to give a shaded effect.

I followed the same pattern on all the sides of the box except the top which I did like this.

and…

The colour scheme has been reversed by me, on the top or the lid. This is partly because I wanted to cover the name of the wine source. πŸ™‚

The next few steps are really interesting and most fun part.

So I took a baby potato, cut it into half and did this…

Well, the bubble (a dot above the fish) was inadvertent. You need not make it. That was a small DIY accident.

Next step is to carve the cute little fishy out of the spud.

I carved the fish out of the potato because Β 1) It was easy to draw and carve Β 2) It went well with the overall wave pattern. However, you can use your imagination and skill to make your own unique pattern. These fishes have been stamped on in no particular order. This is how they looked on it.

Like I do to so many other things, I decided to add some ‘Indian-ness’ to it, in form of hangings on the clip meant to open the box. Since there were no hangings available here, in Switzerland, I made them by myself. I was prompted by these yellow pompoms in a craft shop to make my own. Here is how you can do it. You will need…

First step in making a hanging is to pass the thread across a smaller bead and secure a knot at it. This will serve as stop for further beads or pompoms added in making a hanging.

Following this, keep adding beads of your choice in terms of shape and size and colour (I have used small wooden beads here) to achieve a length you desire. I kept it just above the lower end of the box.

I made two such hangings. You can make more or less or none, if you want. I used the same remaining thread, to tie it to the clip. Here’s how it looks.

Well, I thought of stopping at this point too. But I carried on… when I saw these two things…

…and got this idea of using a bead as the eye of the fish!! Voila, that adds some more shine and some more fun to it!

And now, time to use the lace I’ve been singing to you about. I used it this way.

and…

I’ve put the lace on all four sides. Also on the top around the red ribbon.

Okay so the box is ….

If you intend to use it just as a piece of home decor, this should serve the purpose. But if you want to do more with it, then keep following me. πŸ™‚

On the inside I painted the rim of the box in yellow, this way…

This makes it a bit more lively on the inside too.

The final step, where we should cover the surface of the box to protect the stuff that goes inside this. You can either use a soft cloth (like velvet) which lines most of the jewellery boxes or a soft paper towel. I’ve used a soft paper towel as it can be replaced time to time and serves to absorb the moisture as well.

with this it is ready from inside too. Look.

So with this you can keep what’s dear to you, in an organized way. Even if you are running late for the party, finding the right one to go with the dress would be a much easier job. This also makes a great gift idea. And the best part of this project is…. you can stop anywhere you like and it will still look gorgeous! Also painting is one activity with boundless options to create something totally unique and fun. I find it very soothing and relaxing plus the returns are rewarding πŸ™‚

Hope you enjoyed going through this. Let me know how did you like it. Any queries/new ideas on the same, are welcome as always.

I will be back again soon, with more colours and ideas. Till then…

Let the ‘fishing’ business be only on the outside πŸ™‚
